Thursday, 22nd June 2023, marked a momentous occasion as Claridge’s Restaurant swung open its art deco doors on Davies Street, embarking on a new chapter in its illustrious history. This classic yet contemporary British eatery, set to fully unveil in September, is now under the hotel’s direct management, staying true to the inimitable Claridge’s style, with culinary maestro Coalin Finn at the helm. The restaurant, which originally bore the same name over two decades ago, aims to become the vibrant heart of the Mayfair community, appealing to both London locals and global visitors alike.
From breakfast to dinner, Chef Coalin Finn, hailing from Ireland with previous stints at Inverlochy Castle, Davies and Brook, and Sketch, oversees a menu that fuses classical inspiration with modern flair, showcasing the finest locally sourced ingredients. As the kitchen’s marble-framed doors gracefully serve the starters, guests can savor delicacies like Buckwheat Crumpets adorned with soubise cream, truffle puree, and slices of truffle, or Dorset Snails accompanied by parsley and parmesan croute. Barbequed Radish Skewers, braised in homemade teriyaki with a hint of horseradish, tantalize the taste buds. For mains, an array of dishes, such as the indulgent whole wild Turbot grenobloise meant for sharing, the delightful Artichoke Agnolotti, and the delectable Grilled Native Lobster with crushed Jersey royals and sauce Américaine, await discerning diners. To conclude on a sweet note, summer desserts include the divine Raspberry Vacherin and the heavenly Chocolate Souffle Tart with cocoa nib ice cream. A selection of all-British cheeses, sourced from Nottinghamshire to St. Andrew’s, accompanied by cherry chutney and plum crackers, offers a perfect finale to the culinary journey.
Designed by the renowned Bryan O’Sullivan Studio, the restaurant pays homage to Claridge’s art deco heritage. The contemporary colour palette complements Calcutta Viola marble and antique brass accents. Mosaic flooring, central leather banquettes, and elegant pendant lamps inspired by the art deco architect Joseph Hoffman infuse the space with a true sense of glamour. The restaurant’s distinctive art deco starburst skylights, crafted by Guy Oliver, and the carefully curated artwork from Claridge’s extensive private collection, featuring pieces from artists like Sean Scully, Guggi, Richard Gorman, along with two bespoke commissions by Brian Clarke, bathe the space in natural light and add an artistic flair to the ambience. The expansive windows along Davies Street offer access to an alfresco terrace, stretching the length of the hotel, allowing guests to revel in the convivial environment. An exclusive private dining room showcases a playful take on panelling by the talented next-gen artist Sam Wood.
A true gem within Claridge’s Restaurant is the high-gloss tortoiseshell bar, where patrons can unwind with an aperitif or savour classic seasonal cocktails. Notable concoctions include the Ambre Highball – a refreshing white wine spritzer with delightful stone fruit notes – and the Peach Piquant, a masterful mix of tequila and mezcal that entices the senses.
While eagerly anticipating the full opening in September, Claridge’s Restaurant currently welcomes guests with limited hours and availability. The restaurant serves breakfast every day of the week, lunch from Wednesday to Sunday, and dinner from Wednesday to Saturday. Reservations can be made here.
