With a CV to impress even the most jaded restaurant critic, German-born chef Rainer Becker is undoubtedly considered a star in the world of the culinary arts. He started out his career gaining experience at some of Germany’s top restaurants including Michelin star restaurant Koenigshof in Munich and Goethehaus in Bensberg and later packed his bags to travel the globe while working for the prestigious Hyatt Hotel Group for 14 years.
In Australia, Rainer worked as the executive chef at the Park Hyatt hotel in Sydney where he won a Catering Executive of the Year award in 1992 and later became the executive chef at its sister concept in Tokyo for six years.
Moving to London in 1998, Rainer worked as the executive chef at both the Hyatt Carlton Tower hotel and as a consultant at Alan Yau’s restaurant, Hakkasan, before opening his own Japanese inspired restaurant, Zuma, with business partner Arjun Waney in London’s Knightsbridge in 2002. In 2004, Rainer opened his second restaurant, Roka, in Charlotte Street. Destined for global culinary domination, Rainer has since opened restaurants in Hong Kong, Istanbul, Dubai and Miami as well as additional eateries in London, including restaurant Oblix in one of London’s most famous landmarks, The Shard, which opened in 2013 to rave critical review.
