This December, the prestigious La Pirogue Marlin World Cup returns to the warm, crystal-clear and marlin-rich waters of Mauritius, promising a blend of intense competition and sustainable fishing practices. Scheduled from December 9th to December 14th, the event marks a much-anticipated comeback, being the first since its last edition in 2012.
Established in 1982, the La Pirogue Marlin World Cup is celebrated as the oldest big-game fishing competition in the Indian Ocean. Previously, the event drew nearly 200 participants from various countries, including England, Italy, Norway, Sweden, Germany, and local Mauritian teams. The primary focus in on catching the elusive blue and black marlins, as well as other notable species like spearfish and swordfish, all while adhering to the guidelines of the International Game Fish Association.
Following four days of intense competition to see which team can accumulate the highest score, the ultimate victory is awarded to the crew that successfully catches the greatest number of fish. Notably, capturing a marlin garners more points than any other species.
Guided by a commitment to environmental sustainability, the event will adopt a “catch-and-release” policy, ensuring the preservation of the marine ecosystem. This initiative reflects the ethos of Sunlife, the hosting organisation, which has been a pioneer in promoting eco-responsible tourism through its various properties and events.
La Pirogue, a landmark hotel on the island renowned for its authentic Mauritian charm and hospitality, will host international anglers and guests. The beautiful beachside property, surrounded by a coconut grove and characterised by its thatched-roof bungalows and vibrant village-like atmosphere, promises an immersive experience blending luxury with local culture.
As Mauritius cements its reputation as a top destination for big-game fishing, this event is a must for angling enthusiasts. The competition schedule is as follows:
- December 9th: Captains’ briefing and opening cocktail reception.
- December 10th-13th: Fishing days, interspersed with leisure activities.
- December 14th: Awards ceremony and gala dinner at La Pirogue.
