The origins of Vellamo‘s water can be traced back thousands of years, to when the blanket of Ice Age snow covering the Nordic landscapes began to melt. As the sun’s rays warmed the ground, the water ran free and found its way into a cavern below the earth’s surface. After a glacier formed an impenetrable layer of ice and rock trapping the runoff in, the water became instantaneously sealed off from pollution and atmospheric impurities. This is when Mather Nature began its magic, organically perfecting the water’s composition down to the last drop.
With a distinctive taste bestowed upon it by the stone which filtered it, this naturally pure water possesses a unique blend of healthy minerals specific to the geological environment from where it is extracted. Sourced from deep below the Finnish ground, the water journeys through a 30km-long underground granite-clad canyon, and this is where it inherits its individual minerality. Completely pure, the water honors its mythic name – the title of the Finnish goddess spirit of water.
Reflecting its origins, the Vellamo bottle‘s shape replicates a block of ice. Made of 100% recyclable glass, the bottle’s translucency is a nod to the water’s purity, and the aesthetic mirrors the glistening blues of the glacier from which it formed. The debossed water element on the back flows from top to bottom, reflecting the Vellamo story – a glacier slowly melting through rich Nordic soil into a one-of-a-kind, mineral-rich cavern, where Vellamo was perfected by Mother Nature for over 10,000 years. When the bottle is placed face down on its side, that very cavern’s motif comes to the forefront, and with a hint of imagination, a goddess-like figure – the Vellomo spirit – can be seen in the flowing water.
Focused on nature and sustainability; from the water’s origin to the brand’s aesthetic and products’ packaging, Vellamo has taken countless steps to safeguard its water’s unique taste and purity while protecting the environment. Working with frontrunners in eco-labeling, UPM Raflatac, Vellamo has managed to procure a truly innovative and sustainable label for their products made from UPM Raflatac Forest Film PPTM, the world’s first and only wood-based polypropylene plastic label material. This transparent label material is constructed from UPM BioVerno naphtha, a 100 percent wood-based solution made from tall oil, a residue of pulp production, originating from sustainably managed forests. Forest Film PP offers companies like Vellamo an efficient and impactful way to reach beyond their sustainability goals without compromising on product performance. It is made from entirely renewable, wood-based raw materials in an ISCC certified value chain and has identical quality and performance as conventional fossil-based films. The Vellamo label also features UPM Raflatac’s RafMore, an innovative smart label solution that allows consumers to scan the label unique to every Vellamo bottle and access real-time product lifecycle and carbon footprint data.
An ambitious brand, Vellamo aims to be the world’s most sustainable bottled water company by reducing the CO2 generated within the lifecycle of the product and processes to zero. All manufacturing and sub-supply chain activities are integrated into the full sustainability process, including bottling operations, which use only renewable energy including solar and geothermal technology. The high-quality, sustainable label is an integral part of the Vellamo water brand and supports Vellamo’s CO2ZERO Sustainability Program.
Much like its rigorous sustainability efforts, Vellamo adheres to strict natural mineral water standards to maintain its official seal of approval and high-quality status of being naturally pure, unique in taste, bottled at the source, and possessing no environmental pollution or added minerals or sweeteners. This extraordinary Finnish water is undoubtedly some of the purest in the world.
